BLACK DISABILITY ACTION GROUP

"Acting now for Black Disabled People"

This service is funded by charity projects, Lottery, and Scope in the Midlands.

What is the Black Disability Action Group?

The Black Disability Action Group, is a project within the Council of Disabled People and aims to promote the interests of Black Disabled people throughout Warwickshire.

The Black Disability Action Group's main objective is to raise awareness of black disability and cultural issues which are faced by black disabled people, and to promote equal opportunities.

Race and Disability Discrimination

The general opinion from Black Disabled People is that we are not being treated fairly. This is occurring even within the Black Community, where black people can identify with one another, but cannot identify with black disabled people. This is due to stigma and ignorance. This can be very isolating for black disabled people, and many feel that they have no place in society, even within their own communities.

The Black Disability Action Group works towards raising awareness and eradicating discrimination.

Black Carers

The Black Disability Action Group is here to support Carers too.

Many carers within the black community do not actually recognise that they are carers.

This is because 'caring' is seen as part of the family role to look after other family members, and individuals tend to take on full responsibility themselves. This can be very isolating for the carer, as they do not have the freedom to pursue their own interests, attend support groups and can be very depressed.

What is the aim of the Black Disability Action Group?

  • To identify Black Disabled people and carers
  • To ensure that Warwickshire promotes the ethos of an inclusive society with the full participation of Black Disabled people.
  • To work and encourage existing ethnic community groups and organisations, to raise awareness of disability and cultural issues that Black Disabled people face and to improve physical and cultural access.
  • To support groups of black carers of disabled children and adults and self-development of young Black Disabled people.

Race and Disability Equality Course

The aim of the course is to

  • Look at multiple oppression affecting Black Disabled people.
  • Race and disability provides an opportunity to explore, discuss and analyse these issues.
  • Enable participants to identify and address discriminatory forms of practice towards black disabled people and to examine the role of non-disabled people.
  • Challenge the organisational behaviour which reinforces negative myths and values which prevent black disabled people from gaining equality and achieving full participation in society
  • Encourage people to include black disability as an integral part of equal opportunities policies and practice.

Counselling Service

"A free and confidential counselling service for disabled people, run by disabled counsellors"

The CDP Counselling Service is funded by SCOPE

What the 'Counselling Service' is...

The 'Counselling Service' is part of the Council of Disabled People Warwickshire (CDP). The service is available to disabled people, living in the districts of Rugby, Stratford and Warwick.

Counselling might help you...

Counselling offers an opportunity to talk in confidence and reflect upon anything causing you anxiety.

Counselling does not guarantee answers or instant cures, but provides you with time and space to look at what you are feeling and experiencing, with an impartial listener.

A counsellor will not tell you what to do, but will listen carefully to what you say and work with you towards a better understanding of your situation and feelings. You will probably find that this brings some relief. You may then be able to make changes in your life. Counselling may also help you to come to terms with what you cannot or do not wish to change.

Why people sometimes need counselling...

It is not abnormal to have emotional difficulties, and it is healthy to talk about them.

People sometimes need counselling for a number of reasons, such as redundancy, breakdown of a relationship, stress, depression, anxiety, lack of confidence.

You may not be able to attach a 'label' to the way you feel, but if you know things are not right, counselling might help.

The counsellors at the 'Counselling Service'...

The 'Counselling Service' is run and counselled by disabled people as part of a range of services offered by the Council of Disabled People Warwickshire.

Our counsellors are trained and work to the British Association of Counsellors' Code of Ethics.

Confidentiality

Whatever is discussed within a counselling situation will remain confidential unless the counsellor feels that to do so would put the client or a third party at risk.
.

The Cost

Although the 'Counselling Service' is free to those without financial means, we do expect others to contribute between £1-£20 per session dependant on income.

What happens at the first counselling session..?

The first appointment will be an opportunity to discuss whether continued counselling would be helpful and it therefore without obligation for either you or the counsellor.

If, by the end of the session - usually about fifty minutes - you and the counsellor both agree that counselling seems appropriate for your situation, than arrangements will be made for further sessions

Volunteer scheme

"Offering disabled people access to opportunity"

This service is funded by the National Lottery Charities Board.

What is the volunteer scheme?

The Council of Disabled People's Volunteer Scheme aims to create opportunities and access for disabled people in education, leisure, training, employment, recreation, and social life.

CDP volunteers enable disabled people to play a full role in the life of the community.

The occasional support of a volunteer can make it easier for disabled people to do things which non-disabled people take for granted.

The Volunteer Scheme is one of the many CDP services promoting equal opportunities and choices for disabled people.

CDP volunteers do not provide 'essential services', such as domestic care or transport for medical appointments. If you would like to know more about the support that is available in these areas, please contact our Information Service:
Tel/fax/minicom: 01926 889 349.

Who can apply for volunteer support?

Any disabled person aged 16 or over, living in Warwick, Stratford or Rugby Districts can apply for volunteer support - in particular, people living independently, who do not require or cannot afford personal assistance around the clock.

Disabled people can apply for volunteer support for any social, leisure, educational or community activity of their choice.

CDP volunteers do things like...

  • Accompanying someone to the theatre or cinema once a month.
  • Helping someone with their shopping once a week.
  • Going swimming every Wednesday after work.
  • Helping someone with gardening.
  • Popping round for a coffee and a chat once a fortnight.

Who can be a volunteer?

Anyone with a couple of hours to spare each week, fortnight or month can be a volunteer.

We positively welcome people from all sections of the community, regardless of disabilty, race, culture, gender, age and sexuality.

We will 'match' you with a suitable disabled person, who you will support on a one-to-one basis. Often, you can assist simply by accompanying someone.

What do volunteers get in return?

  • All expenses paid.
  • On-going support from our full time Project Worker.
  • Free entry onto our training programme, with Warwickshire College - a chance to gain skills in a range of disability issues.
  • Regular Social Events.
  • Full personal injury insurance.
  • A fun and rewarding experience.

Who should I contact?

If you are interested in being a volunteer, would like support from a volunteer, or would like to know more about the volunteer scheme, please contact the volunteer scheme co-ordinator.
