Opportunities for consultation with the community

Seminars and casework carried out by the Centre has highlighted the breakdown in communication between certain members of the community, and service providers. This is particularly the case where technology is rapidly advancing and actively encouraged by Government, but older members of the community lacking basic IT skills are being socially excluded.

The Sikh Community Centre is a well-known, established and recognised means of communication for service providers and members of the Sikh community. There are close links with Warwick District Council, Benefit Agency, Voluntary and Statutory Organisations, who have successfully used the Centre as a means of receiving information from the Community, as well as disseminating information.

Campaigns

The centre campaigns on issues such as health, leisure, education and employment on behalf of those people with English Language difficulties, who find it almost impossible to access information and services.

Learning opportunities

The Centre provides in partnership with Warwickshire College learning opportunities for adults in a welcoming and non-institutional environment. Crèche facilities are available for mothers of young children, along with a computers room. Funding from the Learning Skills Council Coventry & Warwickshire has enabled the Centre to deliver cultural related courses, for those who have not or would not access formal learning.

Welfare rights

Warwickshire Welfare Rights Advice Service are based at the Centre on Wednesdays and provide members of the Community advice on benefit related matters, with the services of an interpreter where necessary.

Social occasions

The Centre provides rooms and a large hall which are available to hire at very competitive rates, along with an industrial kitchen.
